Introduction
___
This book speaks of the awakening of
the self. Borrowing traditions from both
print-media and textile practices, the
work expresses themes of identity, sexuality
and beauty. Using a collaboration of
media imagery and hand-drawn etchings,
I illuminate themes such as delicacy, privacy,
sensuality, preciousness and vulnerability.
A great deal of the work bears a sense of
history and nostalgia. These works comment
on traditions of dressmaking, embroidery,
and coveting memories of childhood. They
suggest an idealization of youth, vanity, and
the preservation of girlhood.
In Awakening I challenge empirical
notions of beauty seeking ways to share
beauty through my narration of growth
and discovery.
